OFFICE OF THE PROVINCIAL CAPITAL COMMISSION /100 Years

What's New

On December 15, 2011, Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon L. Barnhart and Premier Wall removed a time capsule placed at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building over 100 years ago.

The contents of the time capsule, which include photos, journals and currency of the day, will be on display for the public in 2012 at the Legislative Building.

In 1909, more than a century ago, Governor General Earl Grey and Premier Walter Scott placed the time capsule into the cornerstone at a public ceremony celebrating the construction of the building. Thousands of eager citizens traveled from communities across the young province of Saskatchewan to attend the once in a lifetime event.

The removal of the time capsule is just one of many events and programs scheduled throughout the next 12 months in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.

Celebrating the first 100 years

When construction of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building began in 1908, it was more than simply laying stone on stone; it marked the building of the Saskatchewan dream.

Construction progress July 23, 1909 - Exactly one year from starting

By October 4, 1909, the building’s framework was completed up to the base of the dome. On that day, the Governor General of Canada, His Excellency Earl Grey laid the cornerstone at the main entrance.

In a speech written for the occasion, the province’s first premier Walter Scott declared that the new building will forever represent the character and ambitions of the people of Saskatchewan, from its first citizens to all the generations to follow.

Scott said,
"Let us think, as we lay stone on stone that a time is to come when these stones will be sacred because our hands have touched them..."

And building the dream
of what’s still to come...

Today, the Saskatchewan Legislative Building remains the embodiment of the Saskatchewan spirit. Along with our democratic system of government, it belongs to the people it represents - all the citizens of our province, especially our youth, the next great leaders.

The Legislative Building today

This is not only the celebration of the things we have achieved in our first 100 years. It is an opportunity to reflect upon and imagine where we will go in the next 100 years, with a road of possibility in front of us!
